How to Repair Discs for an XBox 360

Microsoft Xbox 360 discs are high-density DVD (Digital Versatile Disc) media that contain more data than a CD or standard DVD. Because of this, the discs must be carefully cared for, as the slightest scratch or imperfection can cause problems when the console tries to read the disc. If your Xbox 360 game discs have become dirty or damaged, there are several steps that can be taken to return them to working order.

Things You'll Need

  • Disc or lens cleaning cloth
  • Glass cleaner
  • Resurfacing paste
  • Tissue paper or resurfacing carousel

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the disc with a cleaning cloth designed for discs, glasses or camera lenses. Wet the cloth with glass cleaning solution and wipe in straight lines from the center to edge of the disc, not circular motions. Wait until the disc has dried, then try it in your Xbox 360. If it still does not work, proceed to the next step.

    • 2

Apply a fingernail-sized blob of resurfacing paste to the disc using tissue paper or a resurfacing carousel. If applying the paste manually, wipe in circular motions around the disc, rubbing firmly until the paste is no longer visible on the disc surface.

    • 3

Try the disc in your Xbox 360. If the disc still does not work, hold it up to a light with the label side facing you. If the disc's scratches do not show through on the label side, it can still be resurfaced by professionals. If the disc contains scratches so deep that they cut through to the label side of the disc, it is beyond repair, even by professionals.
