When a gamer connects her Xbox 360 to her high-definition television (such as an LCD or plasma television), she can experience her video games in high-definition video, instead of standard definition. According to Microsoft, this system supports a resolution up to to 1080p, as long as the television also supports that resolution.
Considerations
The HDMI cable that is compatible with the Xbox 360 tends to cost more than regular HDMI cables. Furthermore, not all Xbox 360 models are compatible with the HDMI cable. Microsoft states that only the Xbox 360 Elite is compatible with the Xbox 360 HDMI cable.
Warning
If the user attempts to use a regular HDMI cable with his Xbox 360, the design of the cable will make it impossible to also have an audio cable connecting the system and an audio system other than the television (such as a surround sound system). A basic HDMI cable only transmits audio and visual to a television, by default. However, the Xbox 360 HDMI AV cable includes an adapter to allow the player to use his surround sound system with the Xbox 360.
