Disassembling The Xbox
Place a bath towel on a table to protect the surface. Remove all cables from the Xbox. Place the Xbox upside down on the bath towel with the warning stickers on the bottom facing right.
Remove the four tabs at the corners of the bottom of the Xbox with the tip of the flat-edged screwdriver to reveal the screws hidden beneath. Scratch off the warning stickers with the tip of the flat-edged screwdriver to reveal the screws hidden beneath.
Remove the screws that are now revealed using the Torx screwdriver. Turn the Xbox over so that the power button is facing you.
Lift the outer case off the Xbox with your hands. Place the outer case aside.
Locate the EEPROM computer chip on the Xbox's circuit board--it is the small rectangular black chip that has "CO2" written on it. Rotate the Xbox so that the "CO2" text is facing you. Rotate the Xbox a quarter turn to the right.
Connect the clamps at the end of the #1, #2 and #3 wires attached to the EEPROM reader to the pins on the EEPROM computer chip in the following order: wire #1 to pin 5 located at the bottommost lower right corner; wire #2 to pin 6 located directly above pin 5; wire #3 to the metal side of the Xbox for use as a ground.
Reading the EEPROM
Download an EEPROM reader program to the PC's desktop, for example, the free PONYPROG program (see the link in the Resources section of this article). Double-click the file once downloaded to install it. Restart the PC after the installation is complete.
Plug the cable of the EEPROM reader into the first COM port on the PC. Turn on the EEPROM reader. Reattach the power cord to the Xbox. Turn the Xbox on.
Launch the EEPROM reader program by selecting it from the "Start," "All Applications" pop-up menu.
Select "Interface" from the "Setup" drop down menu at the top of the EEPROM reader program's main screen. Click on the "Serial" button in the new window that appears. Click on the "COM1" button beneath "Serial." Click the "OK" button to go to the confirmation window.
Click "Yes" in the confirmation window when it appears. Wait for a new window to appear. Write down the contents of the new window on a sheet of paper--the number listed is the EEPROM file information.
Quit the EEPROM program once all of the numbers have been written down. Shut down the PC. Turn off the Xbox and remove the power cord. Remove the EEPROM reader from the PC. Remove the EEPROM reader connections from the Xbox.
Reassemble the Xbox by reversing the procedure used to disassemble it. Reattach all of the cables.
