"Left 4 Dead 2"
Valve's sequel to the hit "Left 4 Dead", "Left 4 Dead 2" offers first-person-shooter, cooperative gaming. The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) gives it a rating of Mature. According to l4d.com, the story has survivors heading to New Orleans by way of five campaigns. Each time you play, enemies spawn in different places, so the experience changes every time. Online play offers several different regular modes as well as a new "mutation"--a unique twist on a game mode--every week. Weapons include a katana, chainsaw, nightstick, Molotov cocktail and grenade launcher. The music, environments and characters add to the horror movie experience.
"Resident Evil 5"
The latest installment in Capcom's long-running "Resident Evil" series offers co-op, third-person-shooter game, with an ESRB rating of Mature, for one or two players. According to ResidentEvil.com, the game takes place in Africa, where bio-terrorism gives rise to a devastating zombie outbreak. The zombies, which the game calls Majini, can move quickly and can morph. For example, the Cephalo has a huge, fleshy appendage where it's head should be. The game offers an online mode, Mercenaries, which takes you through different waves of Majini and allows for some unlocks along the way. You can customize weapons, mostly different guns. "Resident Evil 5" provides a new take on the zombie myth as well as another installment in a popular series.
"Borderlands: The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned" Add-on
This one comes by way of downloadable content on Xbox Live. Gearbox and 2K Games' "Borderlands" presents a nearly seamless blend of the first-person-shooter style and a role-playing game. The ESRB rates "Borderlands" as Mature. According to BorderlandstheGame.com, the Zombie Island add-on allows exploration of the town Jakob's Cove, which a zombie outbreak has reduced to a ghost town. It's filled with "zombie" versions of familiar enemies from the game, such as wereskags. The add-on offers "dozens of new missions to complete and hours of new gameplay." You can collect brains almost endlessly as you explore the large, new horror-themed maps.
"Dead Rising"
The ESRB gives Capcom's "Dead Rising" a Mature rating. According to Xbox.com, the main character in this single-player game, photojournalist Frank West, heads to a suburban town for a story and finds the town facing a zombie apocalypse. The game play entails fighting zombies in a shopping mall, and helping other survivors along the way. The Capcom website boasts weapons such as hockey sticks, shovels and even bowling balls. The sequel, Dead Rising 2, releases September 28, 2010.
