How to Set Up a LAN Network for Xbox 360

The original Xbox helped propel local area network (LAN) gaming into the mainstream with the release of Halo: Combat Evolved. Users would link up to four Xbox consoles together to compete in 16-player battles. LAN gaming still thrives through the Xbox 360's networking capabilities. A user can connect an Xbox 360 to other consoles, allowing the networked systems to participate in multiplayer games together.

Instructions

  1. Network Two Consoles

    • 1

Locate the Ethernet port on your Xbox 360 console. As of 2010, the Xbox 360's Ethernet port is on the rear of the console between the USB and AV ports. You'll find the Ethernet port below the serial number on older Xbox 360s.

    • 2

Plus one end of the Ethernet cable into one of the Xbox 360s.

    • 3

Place the other end of the Ethernet cable into the second Xbox 360. The two consoles are now set up for LAN play.

Network Three or More Xbox 360s

    • 4

Set up your hub device. A network hub can handle multiple Ethernet connections. Several Xbox 360s can be wired to the hub, allowing each device to communicate. Refer to your hub's specific instructions for setup.

    • 5

      Turn off the hub.

    • 6

Connect each Xbox 360 to the hub using an Ethernet cable. The Ethernet port is on the rear of the console in newer Xbox 360s, between the USB and AV ports. The port is located below the serial number in older consoles.

    • 7

Turn on the hub. The consoles are now set up for LAN play.

    Set up the Wireless Network

    • 8

Purchase an Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter for each old Xbox 360 that you wish to add to the network. The newer Xbox 360s include built-in Wi-Fi.

    • 9

Connect an adapter to each old Xbox 360 console by plugging its USB connector into the USB port located next to the Ethernet port on the rear of the console.

    • 10

      Turn on each the console.

    • 11

Go to "Network Settings" in the dashboard of each console, then "Configure Network."

    • 12

Go to the "Basic" tab in the "Configure Network" menu, then highlight and choose "Wireless Mode."

    • 13

Choose "Scan for networks." When the results appear, select "Create Ad Hoc Network." This allows your console to broadcast a wireless signal, allowing consoles with wireless adapters to connect together.
