How to Extract Files From the Xbox 360 HDD

Though it may be a rare instance, you may have to extract files from your Xbox 360 hard drive. You may need the files for backup or to retrieve data from a damaged unit. It's possible to extract the files using downloadable software and view them on your PC. Just be careful and follow directions so you don't overwrite anything you don't want to lose.

Things You'll Need

  • Xbox 360
  • Computer
  • Xbox 360 SATA cable
  • Xplorer 360 software

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the hard drive from the top of the Xbox 360 by pressing the release button and gently pulling the drive from the console.

    • 2

Connect the SATA cable to your hard drive (there is only one possible orientation) and to your computer's USB port.

    • 3

Open up Xplorer 360 on your computer. Expand "partition three" in the left-hand window. Two sub-folders, "cache" and "content," will open up below. Look for a folder that starts with "E000000" followed by several numbers and letters. This is your GamerTag, also known as your Xbox 360 profile.

    • 4

Open the "E000000xxxxxxxx" folder. You will see a "FFFEE07D1" folder. There will be several sub-folders underneath it. The first of these sub-folders contains all of your account information. Click the sub-folder, then highlight the file in the right-hand window.

    • 5

Right-click the file you just highlighted and select "extract." Repeat this process for each of the sub-folders underneath the "FFFEE07D1" folder. These are save files for all the games you've played, gamerpics, themes and everything else stored on your Xbox 360 HDD.

Save the files in a safe location on your PC or, better yet, on a disc. This way you'll be able to access them if something happens to your Xbox 360 hard disc drive.
