Attach the Cables
Locate the port on the rear of the surround sound receiver that you want the Xbox 360 to run through. If you are going to be running only the audio through the receiving then you only need to use the red and white inputs. If you want to run the entire system, audio and video, through the receiver, then you will need to locate the red and white audio ports, as well as the video ports. The video ports can be either yellow for basic, non-high definition video quality, or red, green and blue for component HD quality gaming.
The receiver should have labels on each of the ports in the back informing you as to which channel it is. Basic, yellow composite video will more than likely either be "Video 1" or Video 2." Component HD video will be "Component 1" or "Component 2."
Plug the Xbox 360 video cord into the back of the Xbox and run the other end of it to the rear of the receiver.
Plug the Xbox 360 cord into the ports you have chosen on the rear of the receiver. The ports will be color coordinated with the colors on the end of the audio cord.
Turn Everything On
Power on the receiver and set it to the input that you plugged the cords into. If you plugged it into "Video 1", set the receiver to the "Video 1" input and same for "Composite 1."
Wait for the system to power on before loading a game, a movie, or audio.
Select something to play and listen to each speaker to make sure the audio is coming through. If there is no sound coming from a particular speaker, check for any loose connections and tighten them.
