How to Repair an XBox With a Bad Hard Drive

Hard drives in Microsoft's Xbox 360 can help add to the experiences of gaming, video storage, and music storage. Hard disk drives for the Xbox 360 are sold with all Xbox 360 consoles outside of the Arcade model, but separate hard drives are also available to purchase for upgrade and transfer purposes. Unfortunately, when these hard drives begin to have problems, there are little-to-no options for software fixes. In the vast majority of cases, the hard drive will have to be completely replaced to ensure structural integrity of the system.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the old hard drive from the Xbox 360 by pressing your thumb on the release button located on the actual hard drive. Grasp both sides of the hard drive and lift it from the Xbox 360 system to completely remove the piece.

    • 2

Open the new hard drive and align the drive bays at the same area you just removed the hard drive from. Press down on the hard drive (once the drive bays are aligned) until you hear it click into place. Make sure the hard drive is securely installed and that it doesn't feel loose to the touch.

Turn on the Xbox 360 system and navigate to the storage tab to double check the system is accurately reading the new hard drive. If your installation was successful, the storage tab should reveal the new hard drive and detail the amount of space on it.
