How to Download a Game to an Xbox 360 Hard Drive

The Xbox 360's first major software update arrived in 2008. The upgrade, dubbed the "New Xbox Experience," delivered what the title implied, offering loads of new features with its overhauled dashboard and user interface. Avatars, Xbox LIVE party systems and Netflix were just a few of the new additions to the console. One of the most anticipated new features, however, was the ability to download games to the console's hard drive. Although users still had to have the game's disc in the hard drive to play, many gamers found the feature useful because running the game from the hard drive reduced load times and stress on the console's already fragile disc drive.

Instructions

    • 1

Log your console into Xbox LIVE and allow the Xbox 360 to automatically download the latest software update. If no prompt appears upon log-in, then there is no update available. You must have the NXE update, released in 2008, to download games to the hard drive.

    • 2

Allow the console to restart after the update downloads.

    • 3

Scroll up from the dashboard's main menu until you find "My Xbox." Do not press "A" here because the game will boot up.

    • 4

Push "Y." A new page will appear displaying game data and details.

    • 5

Select "Install to Hard Drive." A progress indicator will appear on screen. The download process is complete when the indicator reads "100%."

    • 6

Push "A" when the download finishes.
