How to Attach or Remove the XBox 360 Hard Drive

The Xbox 360 introduced the external hard drive for gaming systems. Even the original Xbox utilized an internal hard drive. The external hard drive makes it easy to upgrade and take your games on the go. If plan on changing your hard drive or bringing it somewhere else where there is another Xbox 360 system, you must know how to attach and remove it from the system first.

Instructions

  1. Remove the Hard Drive

    • 1

Turn off your Xbox 360 system.

    • 2

Turn the system vertically. The USB ports should be at the bottom and the hard drive at the top.

    • 3

Press the hard drive release button at the top of the system. This causes the front of the hard drive to pop up.

    • 4

Remove the hard drive from the system by lifting off the front, where it released, first, and then the back.

    Attach the Hard Drive

    • 5

Turn off your Xbox 360 if it isn't already off.

    • 6

Turn the system vertically so the empty hard drive bay is at the top.

    • 7

Place the larger end of the hard drive into the back of the bay.

    • 8

Set the front, narrower end, of the hard drive into the front of the bay. The hard drive should snap into place when the release button connects.

    • 9

Turn on your system and the Xbox recognizes the hard drive right away.
