How to Create a Lag Switch

Video gamers who participate in online games can perform better than others by using a "lag" switch. This is a device which physically interrupts the flow of data from a video game console to the Internet server hosting the game and renders the player invulnerable to harm. Creating a lag switch involves a few supplies from around the house and from a hardware store or computer supply shop. The procedure can be done in less than 20 minutes by even the most inexperienced of gamers.

Things You'll Need

  • Ruler
  • Ethernet cable, 10 feet long
  • Utility knife
  • Wire strippers
  • Flat-edged screwdriver
  • Light switch
  • Video game console
  • Wired home network

Instructions

    • 1

Measure six inches in from one end of the Ethernet cable. Make a five-inch slit in the outer shielding of the Ethernet cable, starting at the six inch mark, with the blade of the utility knife.

    • 2

Locate the solid orange wire that is inside of the cut Ethernet cable. Cut the solid orange wire in half using the blade of the utility knife. Pull each half of the now cut solid orange wire out from inside of the Ethernet cable.

    • 3

Strip a half inch of insulation from the ends of the two solid orange wires using the wire strippers.

    • 4

Partially unscrew the screw from each end of the light switch with the flat-edged screwdriver. Wrap the exposed end of one of the two solid orange wires around one of the screws on the light switch. Wrap the exposed end of the other solid orange wires around the other screw on the light switch. Screw down the wires with the flat-edged screwdriver.

    • 5

Plug the end of the Ethernet cable that is closest to the light switch into the Ethernet port on the video game console. Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into an Ethernet port on the router of the wired home network.
