How to Use the Xbox Remote on a PC

Microsoft has numerous accessories to go along with its Xbox 360 gaming system. The Microsoft Xbox 360 infrared remote control can be used to control both the Xbox 360 console and a TV. While its default usage does not include controlling a PC that is not connected to your Xbox 360 through Windows Media Center, it is possible with the use of several inexpensive devices and the right software.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Connect your Microsoft receiver to your computer via the USB connector. If a drivers disc was included with the receiver, insert it and follow the installation prompts.

    • 2

Right-click on the TweakMC startup icon (see Resources for download) and select "Run as administrator." Enable "Universal Remote Control" in the "Remote Control Settings" section. In the "Set Remote Control ID" section, set the ID as either 0 (enables all compatible remotes), 1 (enables only Microsoft remotes), or 8 (enables only Xbox 360 remotes) and click "Save." Restart your computer.

    • 3

Double-click on your Intelliremote startup icon and open the "Customize" tab. Click on the "Media Center Vista" profile (this profile will also work with Windows 7 and XP Media Center).

    • 4

Scroll to the bottom of the "Keys" list. Select "Volume Up" and then click on the "Learn Code" button. Press the "Volume Up" button on your remote control until you are prompted with a "Learned!" pop-up box.

    • 5

Repeat the last step for the "Volume Down," "Channel Up," "Channel Down" and "Mute" buttons.
