How to Transfer Data From an Xbox 360 Memory Card to a Hard Drive

The Xbox 360 video game console features the ability to store content without a hard drive and transfer files between Xbox consoles using the portable memory unit. Game saves, Xbox profiles, downloaded games and other content can be transferred using the Xbox memory unit. A system update released by Microsoft in 2010 introduced the ability to use a USB flash drive as a memory unit, providing a portable storage capacity of up to 16 GB. The file-transfer process for both a memory unit or a 1GB USB flash drive involves the same set of steps.

Note that in order to transfer files using a USB drive, the device must be properly configured. If necessary, Microsoft offers tutorials for configuring USB devices for Xbox storage.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the memory unit or USB drive into the port on your Xbox 360. Note that the 2010-redesigned Xbox Elite S console does not feature memory unit ports and is only accessible with a USB flash drive.

    • 2

Highlight "System Settings" from the "My Xbox" menu, and press the "A" button. Highlight "Memory," and press the "A" button.

    • 3

Highlight your memory unit or USB drive from the list of storage options, and press "A." Highlight the type of content you wish to transfer, and press the "A" button. Highlight the specific item your wish to transfer, and press "A."

    • 4

Highlight "Copy" or "Move" from the options listed, and press the "A" button to transfer the item. Select the Xbox hard drive from the list of storage options to set the destination for the transfer, and press "A." Selecting "Copy" will leave the original item on the memory unit or USB drive while placing a copy on the hard drive, while "Move" will transfer the original file and remove it from the portable storage device. Once the transfer process is complete, the file will now be accessible from the Xbox 360's hard drive.
