How to Setup a Wireless Router For an XBox 360

The Xbox 360 can connect to the Internet in two basic ways; wired or wirelessly. Connecting wirelessly requires a router, which transmits the Internet signal to other Internet-capable devices. In order to properly set up a router with an Xbox 360 for wireless gaming, the user needs to purchase a separate adapter because the console doesn't come with Wi-Fi capabilities. After purchasing the adapter, gamers can configure their Xbox 360 to automatically connect to their desired wireless access point. Gamers also can connect the Xbox 360 directly to the router, if desired.

Instructions

  1. Wireless Connection

    • 1

Configure your router as specified by your router's instruction manual. A router must be connected to a modem to access the Internet. Then it usually must be configured with your PC.

    • 2

Turn off the console and dock the adapter to the rear of the Xbox 360 by sticking the two jutting edges of the adapter into the two small holes above the A/V ports.

    • 3

Power the adapter by hooking its USB plug-in into the USB port on the rear of the console. Notice that the adapter's light turns on.

    • 4

Turn on the console and access the Network Settings menu by attempting to connect to Xbox Live. The connection will fail, and you'll be prompted to test the network. Select "Yes, test connection" to access the Network Settings menu.

    • 5

Choose "Configure Network" then go to the "Basic Settings" tab.

    • 6

Highlight and press "A" on "Wireless Mode."

    • 7

Highlight and press "A" on "Scan for Networks." Your console's wireless adapter will scan for network's in range, including your router's network. A results page will appear.

    • 8

Choose your network's name from the results page and enter the password if it has one. The adapter will then connect to the router.

    Wired Connection

    • 9

Configure your router as specified by your router's instruction manual. A router must be connected to a modem to access the Internet. Then it usually must be configured with your PC.

    • 10

Power down all devices, including your PC, Xbox 360, modem and router. The router and modem may not have power switches, so you may have to unplug them from their outlets to turn them off.

    • 11

Connect your Xbox 360 to your router using a CAT5 Ethernet cable.

    • 12

Power your modem back on and make sure it's connected to the Internet before proceeding to the next step. Most modems have lights indicating power and Internet connections.

    • 13

Turn the router on and wait until it's fully connected to the Internet. Most routers have lights indicating power and Internet connections.

    • 14

Power on the PC that's connected to the router and make sure it can access the Internet.

    • 15

Turn on the Xbox 360 and connect to Xbox Live.
