How to Replace the Hard Drive on an Xbox

In the early days of video games, consoles included built-in memory that allowed users to save data without buying an additional storage unit. In fact, Microsoft's original Xbox was no different. However, Microsoft's second outing into the video-game console market, the Xbox 360, began the requirement that users purchase a storage device to save data. The largest such device for the Xbox 360 is the hard drive, which can be as large as 250 GB and as small as 20 GB. Fortunately, Microsoft ensured a streamlined process for replacing hard drives, which attach externally.

Instructions

    • 1

Power off the console. Locate the hard drive, which is attached to the right of the disc tray when the console sits horizontally.

    • 2

Press the gray button on the hard drive and hold it down. The hard drive will give way a little but won't fully detach.

    • 3

Grip the sides of the larger portion on the hard drive, then pull it off of the console.

    • 4

Position the new hard drive over the vacant hard drive bay.

    • 5

Grip the larger end of the hard drive and push it down as far as it will go.

    • 6

Push down on the other end until the gray button clicks, indicating the hard drive is locked into place.
