How to Modify an Original Xbox

The Xbox video game console can be modified to enable its operating system to perform many of the functions found in the Xbox 360, such as playing games off a hard drive and accessing the Internet to play on the Microsoft Live network. You can modify the operating system without opening the game console by installing special free software created by Xbox enthusiasts. The procedure is straightforward, if a bit involved, and requires the use of a PC. Modifying the Xbox will void any Microsoft warranty that might be in place.

Instructions

  Download an Xbox softmod program to the PC’s desktop, for example, the free Ndure softmod program. Drag the file, once it is downloaded, onto a decompression program such as WinRAR, IZArc or 7-Zip to decompress the file to a folder on the desktop.

  Plug the USB cable of the Action Replay device into a USB port on the PC. Insert the Action Replay device&'s memory card into the slot on the device. Wait for the icon of the memory card to appear on the desktop.

  Double-click on the icon of the memory card to open its window. Drag the Xbox softmod program’s folder into the window. Wait for the progress bar to appear and then disappear from the desktop.

  Right-click on the icon of the memory card. Select “Eject” from the pop-up menu. Disconnect the Action Replay device from the computer.

  Plug the USB cable of the Action Replay device into a USB port on the Xbox. Turn on the Xbox.

  Navigate from the Home menu to the “Game” menu. Select “Memory Save” from below “Game.” Copy the two game saves from the list presented to the Xbox’s hard drive. Wait for the pop-up confirmation window to appear that states the two game saves have been copied. Press the “X” button on the Xbox controller. Remove the memory card from the Action Replay device.

  Select the Xbox softmod program from beneath “Game.” Press the “X” button on the Xbox controller to begin the modification process. Wait for the Xbox to restart itself after the installation has been completed.

  Insert the Splinter Cell Xbox video game into the Xbox. Wait for the main menu of the video game to appear on the screen.

  Select “Start Game” from the menu. Select “Linux” from the left column of the window that appears. Select “Check Points” from the top of the window that appears. Wait for the second segment of the Xbox softmod program to appear on the screen.

  Select the “Install Softmod” button. Select one of the two dashboard installers that are presented on the screen that appears. Click the “A” button repeatedly until a progress bar appears. Wait for the Xbox to turn itself off.

  Turn the Xbox back on. Click the “OK” button on the pop-up window that appears on the screen. Click the “OK” button on the “Completed” pop-up window when it appears. Wait for the Xbox to reboot itself. Remove the Splinter Cell Xbox video game.
