3 Rings of Death Towel Fix

The Xbox 360 video game console is notorious for a technical internal error known as the “three red rings of death.” The problem is caused by a failure of hardware components that causes the normal green-lit circle on the power button to turn red. When the ring is red, the console may freeze, overheat or encounter other errors. A temporary solution for the red ring issue is to heat up the cold solder joints in internal processor chip by covering the console with a towel.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure the lights remain a solid red color on your Xbox 360 for at least 30 minutes. Turn off your Xbox 360 and unplug all connected cords from the device.

    • 2

Wait five minutes and then reconnect the cords to the console. Turn the Xbox 360 back on and see if the red ring still appears. Don’t continue with the towel trick if the red ring is no long visible.

    • 3

Turn off the Xbox 360 and unplug all cords again. Wrap a medium-sized dry towel around the console, covering the top and bottom.

    • 4

Wait 20 minutes and then unwrap the towel from the Xbox 360. Connect all cords back to the console.

    • 5

Turn on the Xbox 360 and the red ring should no longer appear. You can now play your games on the console.
