How to Repair an Xbox Disc

Scratched Xbox 360 discs are a common occurrence, especially since changing the Xbox's positioning while it is running can severely scratch the disc inside of it. You can always bring the disc to your local video store and ask them to repair it; most Blockbuster and Hollywood Video locations have scratch-removing machines. However, this is inconvenient, and the video stores often charge a few dollars for the service. Fortunately, a home remedy is available for disc scratches. Although it doesn't always work, it is a fairly reliable solution for smaller scratches.

Instructions

    • 1

Squirt a moderate amount of toothpaste onto the surface of the disc you are trying to repair and spread the toothpaste evenly on the reflective side of the Xbox disc so that it is completely covered by a thin layer.

    • 2

Rub the toothpaste into the surface of the disc gently using your fingers. Do not use a circle motion around the surface of the disc; rather, polish the disc with a straight motion, starting from the center where the hole is and ending at the edge of the disc. Continue this for about 45 seconds.

    • 3

Rinse the disc off with warm water. Use your fingers to lightly wipe the toothpaste off the surface of the disc. Make sure no large chunks of toothpaste are left, as this will make it difficult to properly dry off your disc.

    • 4

Towel off your disc with a paper towel, making sure it is completely dry. Do not rub the disc too hard when drying it off, as paper towels can sometimes be rough and can potentially cause more scratches to appear on your disc.

    • 5

Put your disc into the Xbox and see if it works. If it is still unreadable, try repeating the polishing process. If the disc remains unreadable after three polishing processes, the scratch is most likely too deep for conventional remedies to repair.
