How to Repair an XBox 360 E74

If two red LED lights flash continuously on the front panel of an Xbox 360, you have an E74 Error with the system. This means the internal fan isn&'t working properly and needs to be reset. The good news is that there is a way to fix this error without completely disassembling your Xbox. It will take a little concentration but you should be able to complete the process in a limited amount of time.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any games in the disk tray of your Xbox 360 and then turn off the system.

    • 2

Use your fingers to remove the cotton from one end of both of the swabs and turn your Xbox 360 around so you are facing the rear of the device.

    • 3

Locate the rear of the two internal fans through the vent holes in the back of the device. Insert the cotton-less end of your swabs in the vent holes and let them rest between the fan blades.

    • 4

Turn the Xbox on and make sure the rear fans aren&'t spinning. All red warning lights around the power button will now be flashing.

    • 5

Unplug the power cable from the rear of the console when there only the two left side red warning lights are flashing. It should take about five minutes for this to happen.

    • 6

Remove the cotton swabs from the rear of the device and let the system cool for about 10 minutes.

    • 7

Reinsert the power plug and turn the unit on. The fans should be completely reset and you will no longer get the E74 error.
