How to Identify an Xbox 360 DVD Drive

When first introduced, the Xbox 360 video game console shipped with either a Hitachi LG DVD drive or Toshiba-Samsung DVD drive. In 2007, Microsoft introduced BenQ and LiteOn drives into the mix with the release of the Xbox Elite and Xbox Arcade packages. Because the drives are internal and not labeled on the disc tray itself, you must examine the design of the disc tray to identify which DVD drive your Xbox 360 has.

Instructions

    • 1

      Turn on the Xbox 360.

    • 2

Open the disc tray and remove any disc that may be present.

    • 3

Look at the disc tray. If you see a small hole in the bottom middle of the tray, the console has a Samsung drive. If you find a large hole in the far right of the tray, the console has a Hitachi drive. The disc trays for the BenQ and LiteOn drives have no holes. In these cases, you must remove the Xbox 360 faceplate to find out which drive the 360 has.

Close the disc tray and remove any memory cards that may be present. Turn the Xbox off. Hold the console as still as possible. While using your thumbs, pull the faceplate from the right side, next to the USB ports, away from the case.

Look for the wires inside the hole under the DVD drive. If the wires are white, it is a BenQ drive. If the wires are yellow, it is a LiteOn drive. Reattach the faceplate the same way you took it off. It will noticeably snap into place when you reattach it properly.
