Troubleshooting a Wired Xbox 360 Headset
Check the Xbox headset and controller connections. Ensure that the headset&'s connection is not covered with dirt or debris. Examine the headset port on the Xbox 360 controller, checking carefully for any debris present in the connection. If any component requires cleaning, use a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol.
Make sure the Xbox 360 controller is functioning properly. Ensure that the batteries do not need to be replaced, and test that the controller is synchronized with the console by using it to turn the system on and off.
Connect the headset cord firmly into the port on the Xbox 360 controller. When inserted correctly, the controller connection should be solidly in place. Ensure that the mute button on the microphone is not enabled, and that the volume is turned up so that you will be able to hear audio coming through the headset.
Test the headset by sending a voice message. Press the Xbox controller guide button, and select "Messages." Choose "Create New," followed by "Message." Select the Gamertag of a friend on your list to send the message to, and select "Send Message." Choosing "Add Voice" will allow you to record the voice message. Put on your headset, and press the "A" button to begin recording. Speak into the microphone, recording a short message between 5 and 15 seconds. Stop the recording by pressing "A," and select the "Play" button to playback your message. If you can hear your message clearly, the headset problem has been resolved. If you are unable to hear the message, further action may be required.
Ensure that the volume is not muted in the console settings. Press the Xbox controller guide button, and select "Preferences" from the "Settings" section of the menu. Select "Voice," and ensure that the volume has not been turned down or muted. This step is typically necessary when you cannot hear noise through the earpiece or when other players cannot hear you.
Troubleshooting Wireless Xbox 360 Headsets
Ensure the headset is connected to the Xbox 360 console. Power on the console and headset. Press the "Connect" button on the console, followed by the "Connect" button on the headset to synchronize the headset with the Xbox 360 system. When the headset is first connected to the console, the Xbox must receive an update through Xbox Live to enable the use of a wireless headset, so ensure that the console is connected to the Internet.
Check the position of the console and headset. Move the headset closer to the Xbox, and make sure that both are at least three feet away from large metal objects that may interfere with the wireless signal. Ensure the console is facing the headset when you wear it, and that no large objects or walls obstruct your view of the console.
Check the battery on the headset, and ensure that it has a strong charge. If necessary, charge or replace the battery.
Remove any stickers or decorations from the headset and console. Any metallic decorations, including stickers, can interfere with the wireless signal of the headset.
Check other wireless devices. Make sure there are not four wireless controllers connected to the console. The headset will occupy one of the wireless slots on the console, so if four controllers are connected you will be unable to use the headset at the same time. Other wireless devices, such as cordless phones and microwave ovens may also interfere with the headset and may need to be removed from the area around the console to remove the interference.
