How to Reduce XBox 360 Noise

If you use your Xbox 360 for an extended period, you may notice it makes a strange whirring noise. That's the console's fan running high to keep the logic board from overheating. While this noise is unpleasant, you can reduce the speed of the fan by keeping your console in an open space and connecting a USB cooling fan to your Xbox 360. An outside cooling fan quietly blows cool air into the vents on your Xbox 360, reducing the need for the internal fan to run high.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your Xbox 360 on a flat, level surface. Avoid blocking the console's air vents; this causes the console to improperly disperse heat and powers on the fan.

    • 2

Wipe the console with a clean, dry cloth to remove dust and debris that may be blocking the air vents. Dust can clog the air vents, which can prevent air from circulating and damage the console, according to the official Xbox site.

    • 3

Keep the gaming console away from heat sources. Radiators, vents and other high-powered electronics can cause your Xbox 360 to overheat and produce the whirring noise.

    • 4

Install a cooling fan. Plug the cooling fan into the two empty plastic ports located on the back of your Xbox 360, and position the cooling fan behind the Xbox 360.
