How to Fix a Broken Disk Drive on an XBox 360 at Home

The disk drive in your Xbox 360 is one of the largest internal components in the console. With so many moving parts, it's only natural that it can become damaged or malfunction over time. The good news is that if you've found yourself with a broken or stuck disk drive you can actually fix it at home, without the help of a technician. Even if you don't know much about electronics you can still fix your console in about a minute or two.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your Xbox 360 and place it on a sturdy work surface, such as a table or desk. Locate the drive tray in the front of the console on the left side.

    • 2

Tap the top of the Xbox, just above the drive tray. Don't bang on the top of it, simply tap it with medium force three or four times. This helps clear any bugs in the drive connectors. If it doesn't work, proceed to Step 3.

    • 3

Grip the front faceplate at the seam where the faceplate meets the body of the Xbox. Pull the faceplate gently off the device.

    • 4

Unfold one end of your paperclip so it is sticking straight out and locate the small circular hole just under the drive tray on the front of the Xbox.

    • 5

Insert the end of the paperclip in the hole until the disk drive resets and the tray pops out. This clears any bugs out of the drive system.

    • 6

Close your disk drive and press the eject button on the side of the disk tray to test it. At this point your disk drive should be fixed and working perfectly.
