How to Restore an XBox 360 HDD

The Xbox 360&'s hard drive (HDD) serves as one of the most important accessories to the console, allowing users to save up to 250 GB of data, depending on the HDD model. Without an HDD or any other memory unit, the Xbox 360 is incapable of saving data. There may come a time when you wish to restore the HDD to factory settings, such as if your HDD experiences technical problems or if you want to sell it. Microsoft allows gamers to reformat their HDD for this purpose.

Instructions

    • 1

Hook your HDD to any Xbox 360 and turn on the console.

    • 2

Access the Xbox 360 dashboard if necessary by tapping the Guide button on your controller and pressing Y.

    • 3

Go to "System Settings," located under the far right tab in "My Xbox."

    • 4

Choose "Memory" from the resulting menu. A prompt will appear asking you to select a storage device.

    • 5

Use the left thumbstick on your controller to highlight "Hard Drive" from the memory selection screen but do not select it.

    • 6

Press the Y button to bring up an additional options menu.

    • 7

Select "Format" from the resulting options menu. Your console will warn you that taking this action deletes all data from the HDD, restoring it to factory settings.

    • 8

    • 9

Enter the serial number. Once you enter it, the format process begins.
