How to Fix Broken XBox 360 Games

Microsoft Xbox 360 game discs are sophisticated pieces of optical media, packing up to 8.5 gigabytes of data. The discs are highly sensitive, and should be treated with care. If your disc has become cracked or scratched, it may still be usable. While a disc that has been snapped in two is obviously beyond repair, smaller breakages like nicks in the edge or surface scratches can be repaired, preserving the game data.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the disc with a lint-free cloth that has been moistened with glass cleaner. Wipe in straight strokes from the disc&'s center hole to the outer edge. Sometimes discs appear broken or damaged, but are actually only carrying surface dirt and markings that are preventing proper playback.

    • 2

Treat the disc with a DVD repair kit or resurfacing paste. Light damage to the disc&'s read surface can be repaired with these retail products.

    • 3

Send more heavily scratched discs to be resurfaced by a professional service. Scratches or chips in the disc&'s outer layer can often be repaired by these companies, which use equipment not available to home users.

    • 4

Install the game data on your hard disc. Rent or borrow a second copy of the game and insert this copy into your Xbox 360, then select "Install to Hard Drive" from your console&'s "My Xbox" menu. If your original disc is too scratched or damaged to play the game but can still be inserted into the console&'s disc tray, you can still play the game by inserting the damaged disc and selecting the game from the "My Xbox" menu.

Contact the game&'s manufacturer or distributor (listed in the software manual or game box) if these steps do not fix your game. You may be able to arrange a replacement copy with proof of purchase of the original title.
