How to Change PAL to NTSC in a Xbox 360

Europe and North America have two different video standards: PAL and NTSC. NTSC is used by the United States, Canada and Japan, while PAL is shared by most of the countries in Europe. Therefore, a PAL Xbox 360 that may have been purchased in Europe will not work on an NTSC display unit, whether it be a television or PC monitor. There's an easy solution for this problem, however, and all it requires is a PAL-to-NTSC converter box and a voltage converter.

Things You'll Need

  • PAL-to-NTSC converter box
  • Voltage converter
  • Video-audio cables (composite or component)

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the Xbox 360's video/audio outputs to the video/audio inputs of the PAL-to-NTSC converter box. Low-end converter boxes will have only composite inputs (the cables with the yellow, red and white heads), which are capable of standard-definition video transfer only, while higher-end boxes will have component inputs (the cables with the red, green and blue heads) which are capable of high-definition video transfer.

Connect the converter box's video output, either composite or component depending on which cables you used, to the corresponding video inputs of the television set.

    • 3

Set the converter box's output to "NTSC." Many of these converter boxes work both ways, and the signal can be changed with a little plastic switch. Refer to your specific box's manual for instructions on changing the signal from PAL to NTSC.

Plug the Xbox 360's power supply into the voltage converter, and plug the converter into a power outlet. PAL Xbox 360s use a 230-volt, 50-hertz standard, the same one used in Europe.

Turn on your Xbox 360 and your television and set it to the proper video channel (according to which video inputs you used, as many TVs have several). The converter will then begin converting the Xbox 360's PAL video signal into an NTSC signal that your TV can display.
