How to Update an Xbox Via USB

The Xbox gaming console by Microsoft from time to time needs to be updated. These update files help fix bugs and issues with the system and Xbox Live. Security patches can also be applied via updates. If your console won't connect to the Internet, you can download the files on a regular computer and transfer them over using a standard USB flash drive.

      Download the latest Xbox updates at Microsoft's download site.

      Name the file "$SystemUpdate9199.zip" when prompted to save it. Save it to the desktop.

      Double click on the downloaded file when it is completed on the desktop to unzip the files. Wait for the unzipped file folder to appear on your desktop. If asked where to unzip the file, choose "Desktop."

      Right click on the unzipped files folder and select "Cut." Double click on the "USB drive" icon on your desktop. In the file folder, right click and select "Paste." Wait for the Xbox files to be copied to the USB drive.

      RIght click on the "USB drive" icon again and select "Eject" or "Stop." Wait for the drive to be safely stopped. Remove the USB drive from your computer.

      Plug the USB drive into the Xbox. Turn the Xbox off, wait a few seconds and turn it back on. Wait for the updater to appear on screen, and use the controller to select "Yes" when prompted to continue with the update.
