How to Use a Computer LCD Monitor With an XBox 360

Microsoft's Xbox 360 console, released in 2005, is the successor to the original Xbox. It is capable of high-definition output via either component cables or an HDMI cable with newer models. To enjoy high-def graphics, you need an HDTV or a computer monitor equipped to display HD content. If you're looking to streamline your work space and want to play your Xbox 360 on your computer monitor instead of having to rely on a separate TV, this can easily be accomplished through an HDMI cable or a component-to-VGA converter.

Things You'll Need

  • Xbox 360 console with video output cables (component or composite)
  • Computer monitor
  • Component-to-VGA converter
  • VGA male-to-male cable

Instructions

    • 1

Connect your Xbox's video output to the video input of the VGA converter. You can use either the component or composite output, depending on the VGA converter. Low-end converters and tube monitors will only allow you to use the composite video output (the yellow-headed cable) and transfer only standard-definition video. Higher-end converters and flat-screen monitors allow you to use component video (the red, green and blue-headed cables), which transfers high-definition video (up to 1080i).

Connect the video output of your VGA converter, which should be a small VGA port, to the VGA input of your computer monitor using the male-to-male VGA cable.

    • 3

Power on the Xbox 360 and the computer monitor. The video signal should travel from your console, through the VGA converter and to the computer monitor, allowing you to play games on your monitor.
