How to Update an XBox 360 Hard Drive

Updating Through XBox Live

  Ensure that your XBox 360 is properly connected to the Internet. Connect to your XBox Live account by selecting your XBox Live avatar for the "My XBox" home screen.

  Select "System Settings" from the "My XBox" home screen. Select "Network Settings" from the menu, then select "Test XBox Live Connection." You will receive a prompt if there are any updates.

  Confirm the update installation from the update prompt.

Updating with a USB Flash Drive

  Insert your flash drive into your computer's USB port. Connect to the Internet.

  Download the update from http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/D/8/1D8C09BE-278E-41CD-98BE-EB9188128227/$SystemUpdate9199.zip and save it to your computer in a location you can easily find.

  Unzip the saved file by double-clicking it. Copy the file contents into your flash drive's root directory folder.

  Remove the flash drive from you computer and insert it into your XBox 360's USB port.

  Restart your XBox 360. You will automatically be prompted to install the update. Confirm the update installation by selecting "Yes, Update Now."

Updating Through a Burned CD

  Connect your computer to the Internet and navigate your browser to http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/D/8/1D8C09BE-278E-41CD-98BE-EB9188128227/$SystemUpdate9199.zip. Download the file and save it to a location you can easily remember.

  Unzip the file by double-clicking it. Copy the contents of the file.

  Insert a blank CD into your computer's CD burner. Paste the contents of the saved file into the CD's root directory and write them to the disc.

  Remove the CD from your computer once the files have been successfully burned and place the CD into your XBox 360.

  Restart your XBox 360. You will be prompted to install the update. Confirm the update to your XBox 360 by selecting "Yes, Update Now."
