How to Fix a Broken Xbox 360 Disc Drive

As your Xbox 360 game console ages, you may start to notice that some of the internal components, such as the disk drive, are not working so smoothly. This is just simple wear and tear on the device, but it can render your system completely useless if left untreated. But you can fix the disk drive yourself, and it only takes a couple of minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your Xbox 360 and remove the power cable from the back of the unit. Remove any controllers that may be connected to the front of the unit.

    • 2

Use your fingers to pry the faceplate from the front of the device by the seam where it connects to the side of the Xbox.

    • 3

Turn your 360 on its side and use the tip of your Philips screwdriver to pop the six tabs on the side of the unit. You can access these tabs through the circular vents in the side of the Xbox. Repeat the process for the opposite side of the unit.

    • 4

Use your fingers to pop the six tabs located on the front of the Xbox, where you removed the faceplate.

    • 5

Turn the Xbox upside down and separate the bottom half from the top by the seam in the unit. Remove the bottom half to expose the meta chassis (frame that houses the internal components).

    • 6

Turn the Xbox right-side up and lift the top half of the unit off to expose the internal components, including the disk drive.

    • 7

Use your fingers to reattach or secure either of the two cables where they connect to the back of the disk drive. Do this if the cables are loose or disconnected. This should fix any problem with your Xbox. Reassemble the unit in the reverse order you took it apart.
