How to Upgrade the Hard Drive of an Original XBox

The original Xbox system from Microsoft came with a standard hard drive with 8 gigabytes of storage capacity that can be used when playing many types of games. If your hard drive is full or you want to increase the storage capacity, you can install a new Xbox hard drive into the system. You can upgrade the hard drive of an original Xbox by first obtaining a replacement hard drive for the console.

  • Torx screwdriver
  • Replacement hard drive

Instructions

    • 1

      Unplug the power cord for the Xbox and then remove the cover of the game console. Find and remove the screws with the Torx screwdriver and then take off the cover.

      Find and remove the Torx screws that secure the hard drive and DVD-ROM drive to the case.

      Unplug the data cable and power cable from the DVD-ROM drive. Take the DVD-ROM drive out of the case.

      Unplug the power cable from the hard drive and then release the wires from the plastic hooks that secure the wires to the plastic mount.

      Unplug the data cable from the hard drive and remove the hard drive mount from the case.

      Find and remove the screws from the mount with the Torx screwdriver. Take the hard drive out of the mount.

      Place the new hard drive into the mount and secure it with the screws. Place the mount back in the case and then re-connect the data and power cables.

      Set the DVD-ROM back in the case and re-attach the cables.

    • 9

      Place the cover back on the console and then turn it over to tighten the Torx screws.
