How to Connect an Xbox 360 to a DVD Drive

A DVD drive in an Xbox 360 that has become defective must be replaced. You can remove the DVD drive and insert a replacement DVD drive yourself without violating the Microsoft warranty. You will need a replacement DVD drive from a computer or electronics store. The replacement DVD drive must also be properly formatted prior to use on a computer with free software created by Xbox gaming enthusiasts. No electronic or mechanical skills are needed for connecting the replacement DVD derive to the Xbox 360.

  • Torx screwdriver
  • Flat-edged screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

      Remove all cables from the Xbox 360. Place a soft cloth on a table. Stand the Xbox 360 vertically on the soft cloth with the hard drive compartment facing up.

      Press down on the release latch at the end of the hard drive compartment. Slide the hard drive compartment off the top of the Xbox 360. Place the hard drive compartment aside.

      Place the Xbox 360 horizontally on the soft cloth with the power button facing you. Insert the tip of the flat-edged screwdriver into the upper left hole in the ventilation grill on the right side.

      Push up on the tip of the flat-edged screwdriver to loosen the plastic tab inside the ventilation grill. Repeat this procedure two holes to the right of the upper left hole, an additional two holes to the right and at the upper right hole. Repeat this entire procedure with the ventilation grill on the left side of the Xbox 360.

      Turn the Xbox 360 over. Lift the bottom shelf up. Remove the 14 screws from beneath the bottom shelf with the Torx screwdriver. Turn the Xbox 360 over.

      Hold the sides of the Xbox 360. Lift the outer case off the XBox 360 with your hands. Place the outer case aside.

      Remove the screws from the back plate with the Torx screwdriver. Pull the back plate off. Place the back plate aside.

      Pull off the two plastic inserts, one on each side of the Xbox 360, Place the two plastic inserts aside.

      Remove the screws from the metal plate on the top of the Xbox 360 with the Torx screwdriver. Pull the metal plate off. Place the metal plate aside.

      Remove the screws from around the rectangular metal DVD drive with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Pull the DVD drive up off the Xbox 360.

      Pull the two plugs out of the back connectors of the DVD drive. Remove the DVD drive from the Xbox 360. Dispose of the DVD drive properly.

      Blow off the Xbox 360 with compressed air.

      Attach the two plugs from the motherboard to the appropriate connections on the back of the replacement DVD drive. Place the replacement DVD drive into the position formerly occupied by the original DVD drive.

      Attach the screws around the replacement DVD drive with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver.

      Reattach the metal plate to the Xbox 360 with the Torx screwdriver. Reverse the disassembly process to reassemble the Xbox 360. Reattach the hard drive compartment. Plug in all of the cables.
