How to Upgrade Your Xbox Hard Drive

Xbox 360 hard drives come in four different sizes: 20 gigabyte (GB), 60 GB, 120 GB and 250 GB. If your Xbox has a smaller hard drive and you have found yourself running out of space for new games, you may want to consider upgrading to a larger hard drive. Luckily, Microsoft has made this process rather simple. A relatively cheap Xbox transfer kit is available and can be used to copy all the content from your old hard drive to your new one.

Instructions

    • 1

With the Xbox turned off, remove all cords and devices connected to the console except for the power cord, and then turn the Xbox and a controller on.

    • 2

Plug the transfer cable from the kit into your new hard drive, and then plug the USB end of the transfer cable into your Xbox 360.

    • 3

Place the transfer disc from the kit in your Xbox's disc tray, then close it. Your disc will now load onscreen. Follow the onscreen prompts to complete the data transfer. Once it is complete, turn off your Xbox and continue to the next step.

Unplug all the cords (including power) from your Xbox and stand it upright. Firmly press down on the release button on the top front of the console, and then pull the hard drive straight up and off of your Xbox.

Place the rear portion of your new hard drive in place and then push the front downward until it clicks. Once clicked into place you have successfully upgraded your Xbox hard drive. Reconnect all cords and accessories and turn on your Xbox. Everything will be exactly as it was before, except you now have more free space.
