How to Take Apart an XBox 360 Elite

The Xbox 360 Elite game console is a sleeker version of the original 360. There are minor differences and upgrades on this console, such as an HD connector port and a much larger hard drive. But just like any other electronic device, it is prone to the usual wear and tear over time. If you need to open up your 360 Elite in order to diagnose a problem, and don't have the money to have a technician do it for you, you can take apart the Elite yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your Xbox 360 and unplug it from the power source. Remove the rectangular hard drive (labeled "HDD") from the side of the unit by pressing the circular hard drive release button down while simultaneously sliding it off the unit.

    • 2

Pry the front plastic frame from the unit with your fingers by gripping it at the seam on the side of the Xbox and gently pulling it off.

    • 3

Insert the tip of your screwdriver in one of the two square holes in the side panel of the unit and then gently pry up to pop the side panel out. Remove the side panel completely and set it aside. Repeat the process for the side panel on the other side of the unit.

    • 4

Pop the four square tabs on the front panel of the unit with your fingers. Pop the five tabs on the back of the unit with the tip of your screwdriver.

    • 5

Gently pry the top half of the Xbox from the bottom half with your fingers. The metal housing supporting the internal components of the Xbox will now be exposed.

    • 6

Use your Phillips screwdriver to remove all of the screws on the metal housing. Then turn the Xbox over and remove the bottom frame of the Xbox from the housing. The internal components of the Xbox will now be exposed in the unit.

    • 7

Lift the rectangular DVD drive out of the unit and unplug the two cables from the back of it.
