How to Fix a Broken XBox 360 Lens

The lens (or laser) in your Xbox 360 is the small circular glass component in the middle of the unit that reads each disc inserted into the system. Without a functioning lens, your Xbox 360 will not work, making it a good idea to maintain your lens and pay attention to any problems. The good news is that if you have a broken lens on your Xbox 360, and you don't have the money to take your console to a technician, you can open up the unit yourself and fix the lens.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your Xbox 360 and unplug the power cable from the outlet. Then remove the hard drive (located on the side of the unit and marked by "HDD") by pressing the circular release button on the top of the hard drive down while simultaneously sliding it off the device.

    • 2

Use your fingers to pry the front faceplate off the device at the seam where the faceplate meets the body of the unit.

    • 3

Insert the tip of your Phillips screwdriver in the open holes in the side of the Xbox unit and pop the six tabs that hold the side panels in place. Repeat the process with the three tabs on the other side of the unit.

    • 4

Gently pry the side panels out of the unit with your fingers. Then use your fingers to pop the four tabs on the bottom of the front of the unit and gently pry the top and bottom halves of the Xbox housing a couple of inches apart.

    • 5

Turn the Xbox around so you are facing the rear panel and use the tip of your screwdriver to pop the four tabs in the middle of the back panel.

    • 6

Use your fingers to gently pry the top of the Xbox housing off and set it aside.

    • 7

Use your Phillips screwdriver to remove the six screws located on the sides of the metal case housing the internal components of the Xbox.

    • 8

Pull the bottom half of the Xbox housing off and set it aside. The rectangular DVD drive will now be exposed.

    • 9

Lift the DVD drive up and unplug the two cables that connect to the back of it.

    • 10

Remove the two screws from either side of the drive and then lift off the drive cover to expose the small glass eye of the laser in the center of the drive.

    • 11

Dip the tip of your cotton swab in rubbing alcohol and clean any dirt or grime off the laser eye. Don't press too hard with the cotton swab, but be firm enough to remove any obstruction from the lens. Then clean any dust from the surrounding metal plate. This should completely fix any problem with your 360 lens.

    • 12

Reassemble your 360 in the reverse order you took it apart when finished.
