How to Replace a Disk Drive in an XBox 360

Video game fans who happen to own Microsoft's Xbox 360 are treated to an extensive library of game offerings, both on retail store shelves and online via the Live Marketplace. Despite all the console system can do, from gaming to playing movies to downloading music and photos, occasionally something goes awry and the machine needs fixing. The DVD drive is one component that sometimes warrants some TLC. Luckily there's a do-it-yourself home remedy for a downed Xbox drive.

Instructions

Unplug and remove all cords connected to the Xbox 360 console. Unscrew and remove the console's shell casing; insert the knife (or similar flat tool) to open the click-tabs. Pry the casing off and set it aside. Unscrew and remove the silver metal casing underneath the shell with the Torx screwdriver. Set the casing aside.

Flip the system over to gain access to the DVD drive. Look at the drive to identify what model your Xbox 360 is equipped with: a Toshiba, Samsung or Hitachi, the three drive brands featured in Xbox 360s (there may be some variance in installation between the models).

Unplug the current DVD drive by gently removing the two associated drive cables, the power supply/SATA cables. Gently pull up on the drive to remove it from its casing, and then set it aside. Open the new drive package and consult the included directions.

Insert the new drive into the former drive's space in the system's interior. Plug in the DVD drive according to the directions included with your particular model and make any necessary or recommended adjustments. Flip the Xbox console over and reattach the metal casing and the outer casing. Reattach all related cords and power up the console to check your work.
