How to Get a Wireless Controller to Work on an Xbox

Xbox consoles were manufactured by Microsoft and support wireless controllers (sold seperately). Configuring your wireless controller to work with your Xbox console is quick and easy, involving only plugging the controller's radio frequency (RF module) receiver into the front of the Xbox and inserting 2 AA batteries.

Instructions

    • 1
Your wireless controller needs two AA batteries.

Completely power off your Xbox console to ensure a proper synchronization process. Check that your wireless controller is off (no lights blinking) and insert two AA batteries if the battery pack is empty. Turn the wireless controller's switch to the "On" position to test the power and ensure your batteries work properly. Turn the controller off again before Step 2.

Plug the wireless controller's RF module into a controller port on the front of the console and press the power button on your Xbox. Wait for the system to load. Once the console is displaying the main menu, test the controller's joysticks and buttons to ensure the radio frequency on the RF module and the wireless controller itself is matching. If the controller does not respond, adjust the radio frequency on the RF module and the controller itself so they both use the same frequency.

You will be able to play games after the wireless controller is communicating with the Xbox console.

Insert an Xbox game disc once the wireless controller and RF module are connected and using the same radio frequency. The game should respond to your input commands and your wireless controller will be ready for use with your Xbox console. If your controller does not communicate with the console, turn all devices off and repeat steps 1-3 carefully to ensure a working wireless signal.
