Wired Controller
Download the free gaming software from Microsoft.com. (See Resources for the precise link.) Select "Controller" in the "Select Type of Product" drop-down menu, and then choose "Xbox Controller for Windows" from the "Select Your Product" menu. Choose your operating system and your operating system language. Click on "Go" to obtain the download link for the software.
Double-click the Microsoft software download on your desktop, click on "Install" and navigate through the Installation Wizard to set up the software.
Plug your Xbox 360 controller into an open USB port on your computer.
Wireless Controller
Purchase and plug a wireless gaming receiver into an open USB port on your computer. The new hardware should be detected automatically by your PC.
Insert the disc that came with the receiver into your CD-ROM drive. The drivers will be installed automatically and you will be notified when the process is complete.
Locate the "Search" button on the receiver and press it once. This prompts the receiver to search for your controller.
Turn on the controller. Press the "Search" button on the top of the controller to sync it with the receiver. This may take a few seconds. The Button Configuration Utility will appear once the two devices have synced.
Calibrate your wireless controller with the Button Configuration Utility. Set your preferences for the directional pad and buttons.
