How to Get a Modified XBox Hard Drive

The Xbox hard drive can be modified to perform functions that were not built into the operating system by Microsoft. You can modify the Xbox hard drive using a computer. You will need to open up the Xbox, voiding the Microsoft warranty, but the hard drive can remain in the case. The modification to the Xbox's hard drive does not require any special skills, although care must be taken when connecting it to the computer.

Instructions

    • 1

      Remove all the cables from the Xbox. Put the Xbox face down on a table. Insert the tip of the flat-edged screwdriver beneath one of the rubber feet on the bottom of the Xbox. Lift the tip of the flat-edged screwdriver to dislodge the rubber foot. Remove the rubber foot with your fingers. Repeat this procedure with the three other rubber feet on the bottom of the Xbox.

      Scratch off the sticker on the bottom of the Xbox with the tip of the flat-edged screwdriver. Remove the screw from beneath the sticker with the Torx screwdriver.

      Remove the screws from beneath the rubber feet with the Torx screwdriver.

      Turn the Xbox right side up. Pull the other case off the Xbox with your hands. Pull the ribbon data cable from out of the back of the Xbox hard drive that is to the right of the DVD drive.

      Bring the Xbox over to the computer. Unplug the power cord from the computer. Remove the side or back panel of the computer using the Phillips screwdriver.

      Remove the screws from the side of the hard drive tray inside of the computer's hard drive bay. Pull the hard drive tray out of the computer. Remove the ribbon data cable from the back of the hard drive inside of the hard drive tray.

      Plug the power cord into the computer. Plug the power cord into the Xbox.

      Unplug the power and data cables from the back of the Xbox DVD drive to disable the hard drive from working. Turn on the computer. Wait for the computer's desktop to appear on the computer screen.

      Turn on the Xbox. Wait for the red light to appear on the front of the Xbox, Pull the ribbon data cable out of the back of the Xbox hard drive. Plug the computer's ribbon data cable into the back of the Xbox hard drive.

      Wait for an error message to appear on the computer screen. The Xbox hard drive has now been modified.

      Turn off the computer. Unplug the power cord from the computer. Turn off the Xbox. Unplug the power cord from the Xbox. Remove the computer's ribbon data cable from the back of the Xbox hard drive,

      Plug the Xbox ribbon data cable into the back of the Xbox. Plug the two cables back into the back of the Xbox DVD drive.

      Put the computer's ribbon data cable back into the back of the computer's hard drive. Put the hard drive tray back into the hard drive bay, Reattach the screws. Put the side panel or back panel back onto the computer. Reattach the screws.

      Put the outer case back onto the Xbox. Turn the Xbox over. Reattach the screws to the bottom of the Xbox, Turn the Xbox over. Reattach the cables.
