How to Backup XBox 360 Games to a Hard Drive

Any Xbox 360 with a hard drive has a few added advantages. For starters, a hard drive is much larger than a memory card, allowing you to save up to 250 GBs of content, depending on your model. You can also back up entire games, unlike with a memory card or a compatible USB flash drive. Backing up a game to a hard drive is useful for two reasons--it takes strain off the console's hardware because the game will run off the hard drive rather than the DVD drive and lowers loading times because the DVD drive doesn't have to read and load the disc information.

Download the New Xbox Experience, or NXE, dashboard update if you do not have it. Log into Xbox LIVE and allowing your console to automatically download it.

    • 3

Allow your console to restart when prompted after the dashboard updates and exit to the dashboard if necessary.

    • 4

Scroll up or down to the "My Xbox" section of the dashboard, where you view title art of the game currently in your disc drive.

    • 5

Press "Y" to open a new page.

    • 6

Go to "Install to hard drive" and press "A." Either your console will begin backing up the game to the hard drive or you will be prompted to add space to your hard drive by deleting items. If the latter occurs, clear enough space off your hard drive to allow the game to save.

Complete the backup process by pressing "A" when the game finishes saving.
