Core System Specifications of the Xbox 360

When the Xbox 360 first launched on Nov. 16, 2005, it came in two varieties. The Pro console came packaged with a wireless controller, 20 GB hard drive and media remote and retailed for $399. The Core system came packaged with a wired controller and lacked a hard drive and media remote. It retailed for $299.
  1. Design

    • The Xbox 360 measures 12 inches tall, 3 inches wide and 10 inches deep. It features a concave design as opposed to the convex design of the original Xbox. When the system was first launched, it only came in white. Since then, a black version and various bundled style systems have been introduced. The Core system is only available in white. Also, the Pro system featured a chrome disc tray while the Core came with a white disc tray.

    Central Processor

    • The Xbox 360 is powered by a custom IBM PowerPC CPU. It features three 3.2 GHz cores, two hardware threads per core, 1 MB L2 cache and 2.7GHz front side bus. The CPU has stayed consistent through the life of the Xbox 360.

    Graphics Processor

    • A custom 256 bit ATI 2D/3D graphics card powers the video on the Xbox 360. This card features a 500 trillion triangle-per-second fill rate, 500MHz clock speed and 10MB embedded DRAM running at 256 GB per second. The Xbox 360 has a maximum resolution of 1920x1080, and most games are displayed 16x9 with a resolution of at least 720p.

    Inputs and Outputs

    • The Xbox 360 features various inputs and outputs. Video and audio are dealt with via a Multi-AV cable. Although the Core system only came with standard-definition composite-video cables, other versions of the console came with high-definition component cables. The system also features three USB ports, Ethernet port for Internet connection, DC power port and IR sensor. Up to four wireless controllers run off of a 2.4 GHz wireless signal.

    Storage

    • The Core system lacked the hard drive found in other versions of the console. However, 256 MB of on-board storage was included to store the system OS and download system updates. The system includes two memory ports for external memory cards, which range in size from 64 MB to 512 MB. Also, the Core system has a hard-drive port like other versions of the console, so an Xbox hard drive can be added for more storage space.
