How to Identify XBox 360 DVD Firmware

The Microsoft Xbox 360 allows gamers across the world to play video games, watch movies and communicate with friends. To reduce production costs, Microsoft uses many different pieces of computer hardware inside each system. One piece of computer hardware inside the Xbox 360 is a DVD drive. Different iterations of the Xbox 360, including the Elite version, use different DVD drives from manufacturers Hitachi, BenQ, LiteOn and Toshiba.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug all cords from the system. Look at the back of the system to see if it has an HDMI port, which is a rectangular port with rounded corners located beside the Ethernet jack. If there is no Ethernet jack, then the system has a Toshiba, Samsung or Hitachi DVD drive. All of these drives use the same firmware.

    • 2

Plug all cords back into the system if the system has a HDMI port. Turn on the system and eject the disc tray.

    • 3

Inspect the tray. If the tray has holes and small indents, it is a Hitachi 79FK/L. If it has a smooth surface, the drive is either a BenQ or a LiteOn drive.

    • 4

Pull the front plate off the system by pressing the button on the right side of the system. This will not void the warranty. Look for a small hole under the silver Xbox 360 plate. You will see a small wire in that hole. A yellow wire means that the Xbox has a LiteOn drive. A white wire means it has a BenQ drive. Snap the front plate back on after you have determined the drive's firmware.
