Things You'll Need
Instructions
Set up your high-speed Internet service at home. Xbox LIVE only supports high-speed Internet, such as cable or DSL. Each service provider has its own setup procedures; refer to your provider's specific instructions to finish setting up your service. Oftentimes, the provider will equip you with a self-installation kit or send a technician over to perform the installation.
Connect your Xbox 360 to your high-speed Internet. There are two basic ways to do this. The first method is to connect your Xbox 360 directly to your modem or router via Ethernet cable. The difference between a modem connection and router connection is that a modem can only connect to one device at a time and a router can connect to multiple devices, making a router the ideal choice. Connect to the router or modem by first powering off the router or modem, connecting it to the Xbox 360 via Ethernet cable then powering the modem or router back on. The second option is to make a wireless connection, which requires you to purchase an Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter. The adapter automatically locates and connects to your desired nearby wireless networks. Refer to the adapter's specific instructions for setup steps.
Create your Xbox LIVE account. There are two ways to create an Xbox LIVE account; online or through your Xbox 360. Go to Xbox.com and choose the "Join Xbox LIVE" link and follow the steps to create your account. See References for a link to the account creation page. If you choose to create an account on your Xbox 360, turn on the console, press the "Guide" button and select "Join Xbox LIVE." This will open an account creation wizard that will guide you through the steps. You can create either a gold or silver account. The difference between the two is that you have to pay a monthly fee for the gold account while the silver is free. However, the gold account offers dozens of extra features, such as online gameplay. A credit card is required for the gold account.
