How to Upgrade the XBox 360 to Play XBox Games

The Xbox 360 is capable of playing original Xbox games. It's not an original feature--the PS2 was released five years before the Xbox 360 and could play PS1 games--but gamers always appreciate the ability to play classic titles. Just don't expect that when you insert your original Xbox game disc into your new Xbox 360 console that it will immediately work. First, the Xbox 360 must be properly updated with the New Xbox Experience, more commonly referred to as NXE, update. Additionally, users must install an update for every original Xbox game they wish to play. Fortunately, the process is basically automatic.

Instructions

    • 1

Log into your Xbox LIVE account. This should be the account that you wish to play the original Xbox games on.

    • 2

Confirm that you would like to download the automatic system update if applicable. The system update prompt will only appear if there is one available. If there is no prompt, then you already have the required upgrade necessary to play original Xbox games.

    • 3

Ensure that the original Xbox game you wish to play is backward-compatible with your Xbox 360 by viewing the alphabetical compatibility list on Xbox.com. See Resources for the hyperlink. Games not on the list will not run on the Xbox 360.

Download the game patch for your desired compatible original Xbox game by inserting it into your console and booting it up. Select "Yes, update now" to have the console automatically download and install the patch. The game will restart and be playable after the installation, which takes just a few seconds.
