How to Connect My Xbox 360 to My HD TV

When the Xbox 360 was released in the fall of 2005, it was the first video-game console to feature high-definition playback with up to 1080p resolution. Microsoft, the Xbox's developer, now manufactures several audio-video cable options for its console. The variety makes it convenient for users to find the cable they need for their situation. In the case of high-definition TV owners, Microsoft sells component and HDMI cables.

Instructions

    • 1

View your HD TV's specifications in the owner's manual to determine which type of inputs it supports.

    • 2

Purchase your desired HD AV cable. HDMI cables generally provide better sound and picture quality over component cables, but not all HD TVs have HDMI.

    • 3

Plug the AV cable into your console. The component cable plugs in the larger standard AV port on the back of the Xbox 360 above the Ethernet port. The HDMI port is also located here, just below the component port.

    • 4

Plug the other end into your HD TV. The HDMI cable only has one plug-in while the component cable has five color-coded inputs. Match each plug-in to the corresponding input on the TV.

    • 5

Power on the console and go to the "System Settings" area of the dashboard and choose "Display."

    • 6

Select "HDTV Settings" and choose your television's highest resolution from the list. If you accidentally choose the wrong resolution, your screen will turn blank for a few moments until your Xbox 360 recognizes the video error and restores it back to the previous setting.
