How to Install an Original XBox Hard Drive

The original Xbox gaming console comes with an 8-gig hard drive. If your system has been damaged or the hard drive has failed, you might be considering whether or not to replace your system entirely. This is not needed if you have an original Xbox hard drive laying around you home or you have access to one. The install process on an Xbox is not very hard and can be done in around twenty minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your Xbox from the wall outlet in your home. Turn the Xbox upside down so the bottom is facing up.

    • 2

Peel the small rubber feet from the four corners of the console's bottom to reveal four screws. Peel the warranty sticker in the middle of the console to reveal the last screw.

    • 3

Unscrew all five screws and place them all together so you don't lose them. Turn the Xbox console back right side up.

    • 4

Lift the top of the Xbox casing off of the bottom. This should reveal all of the components to the Xbox.

    • 5

Unscrew the four screws keeping the hard drive secure to the hard drive casing. The hard drive casing is to the right of the DVD drive inside the Xbox.

    • 6

Pull the hard drive casing out and unscrew the four screws holding the hard drive in the casing. These screws will be on the side of the casing.

    • 7

Lift the hard drive out of the casing and unplug the IDE cable and the power cable from the back of the hard drive. These will be labeled "IDE" and "Power". The power cable is yellow and the IDE cable is tan.

    • 8

Replace the hard drive with your new Xbox hard drive. Attach the IDE cable to the back of the original Xbox hard drive and then attach the power cable to it.

    • 9

Replace the screws to the sides of the hard drive casing to secure the new hard drive. Replace the screws to secure the hard drive casing to inside the Xbox.

    • 10

Replace the Xbox casing so the console is back in one piece. Turn the Xbox over and replace the screws at the four corners of the bottom of the Xbox and then replace the screw under the warranty sticker.

    • 11

      Replace the rubber feet.
