How to Transfer Data From an Xbox 360 Hard Drive to a New Hard Drive

Microsoft has been gradually releasing Xbox 360 hard drives with ever-growing memory capacities since the console's release in 2005. The base hard drive originally held up to 20 GB. Now, users can purchase sizes topping 120 GB or even 250 GB. Because of the size increase, many gamers have opted to upgrade, posing a slight problem for gamers who have important data saved on their old hard drives. Fortunately, Microsoft also sells a hard drive transfer kit, which transfers all of the data from a smaller hard drive to a larger one.

  Turn off the console.

  Attach the smaller hard drive to an Xbox 360 console by aligning it in the hard drive bay and pushing down on the large side, then down on the small side until it locks in place. The "smaller" hard drive is the one you wish to transfer data from.

  Remove all items from the console, including game disc, memory cards and controllers.

  Turn on the console and connect a controller to it.

  Connect the hard drive transfer cable's hard drive input plug-in to the larger hard drive. This is the hard drive that you want to transfer data to.

  Plug the other end of the hard drive transfer cable into a USB port on the Xbox 360.

  Sign out of all accounts on your Xbox 360.

  Open the console's disc tray and insert the transfer kit's disc. The disc will guide you through the rest of the transfer.

  Read the introduction and choose "Continue" to advance to the second prompt.

  Select "Transfer Content" to begin the transfer process. You cannot use your Xbox 360 until the transfer completes. Progress is shown on-screen.
