How to Fix Your Xbox 360 Controller Thumbstick

Unlike the traditional directional pad that offers only eight different positions, the thumbstick, also called the analog stick, allows for 360 degrees of motion. All major video game controllers in 2010 feature at least one analog stick, and the Xbox 360 controller is no exception. However, many thumbsticks break after gamers accidentally drop their controller or put it through a particularly intense gaming session. The stick freely slides around the socket and does not respond to player input. The cause is a broken thumbstick peg. Fortunately, you can repair your thumbstick with a few household materials so that you can get back to gaming.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver (wired controllers)
  • T8 security screwdriver (wireless controllers)
  • Toothpick
  • Scissors
  • Instant glue (such as Super Glue)

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect your Xbox 360 controller from your console.

    • 2

Remove all screws from the back of the controller. Wired controllers have seven screws that you can remove with a Phillips screwdriver. Wireless controllers have six screws that require a T8 screwdriver. Place the screws to the side, perhaps in a cup or overturned lid to prevent loss.

    • 3

Pull away the rear controller plate and set it aside. Pull the vibrating assemblies out of their bays to free up the curved silver strip that runs along the controller base. Set this strip aside and remove the controller faceplate from the internal machinery.

    • 4

Pull away the thumbstick in question and remove the broken stick peg. Remove the round peg ring in the peg hole on the underside of the thumbstick.

    • 5

Push the toothpick through the round peg ring so that the ring is positioned around the center of the toothpick. Cut the toothpick with scissors just below the ring. Cut away the remaining toothpick point, as well.

    • 6

Insert the end of the toothpick into the peg hole in the analog mechanism. Cut down the toothpick until it is the same length as the functional thumbstick peg. Ensure that the round peg ring is on the end of the toothpick when finished sizing your replacement peg.

    • 7

Put a drop of glue in the peg hole on the underside of the thumbstick. Press the thumbstick onto your replacement peg. Allow the glue to dry for 15 minutes.

    • 8

Reassemble your controller and test out your new thumbstick. This procedure can be repeated as necessary.
