How to Fix Error 68 on a Hard Drive

If you are playing on an Xbox and suddenly the screen turns black and your hard drive flashes a red light on the front of the box, you have encountered the "Error 68." Sometimes the error occurs while the Xbox is booting up. Basically, Error 68 means that the Xbox hard drive isn't getting enough power or that you may have too many peripherals plugged into the console. While you may be alarmed at this error, there may be a fix for it that doesn't involve calling Customer Service.

Instructions

    • 1

Power off the Xbox and unplug any unnecessary devices attached to it.

    • 2

Press down on the latch that is located on the front of the console. This will detach the hard drive. Lift up the hard drive for thirty seconds and then reattach it. This may help the console reset itself.

    • 3

Turn on the Xbox again to see if the problem has been solved.

    • 4

Insert a new game into the Xbox (newer than 2007). This will cause the hard drive to automatically update its software, which may be the cause of the Error 68.
