How to Fix the Xbox 360 Circle of Death

The so-called "Circle of Death" is one of the more common problems experienced by Xbox 360 users. Also referred to as the red ring of death (when it happens, three red lights encircle the power button), this condition indicates something is amiss with the Xbox 360. There are a couple of ways to determine exactly what the problem is.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the Xbox 360 and look at your power supply. If the light is green, make sure the power supply is properly and firmly plugged into the console.

    • 2

Turn off the console if the red ring remains or if the power supply did not show a green light.

    • 3

Disconnect the power supply and plug it into another outlet or into another room, plugging the console into it as well. If the power supply light goes green, there is a problem with the other outlet. Otherwise, proceed to Step 4.

    • 4

Put the console in a well-ventilated area for about half an hour. This will give it a reasonable amount of time to cool down.

    • 5

Replace the power supply if it still does not show a green light.

    • 6

If the power supply has remained green throughout these attempted fixes and you're still getting the Circle of Death, request a shipping label (available at microsoft.com) to send in the Xbox 360 for repair. In this case, the problem with your console is a probably a hardware issue, and is thus something you want the experts to address.
